FreeStyle Libre - Keeping Track Of Your Glucose Ups And Downs

Diabetes will cause daily fluctuations in your glucose levels, but regular glucose scanning throughout the day will help you maintain better glucose control. With the help of the features and reports of the FreeStyle Libre system, you can avoid glucose highs (hyperglycaemia) and lows (hypoglycaemia).

TARGET GLUCOSE RANGE

When you set up the FreeStyle Libre System for the first time, you can enter your Target Glucose Range in the settings of the reader.

The Target Glucose Range helps you keep track of how your glucose levels are compared to the specified target range.

How Can The FreeStyle Libre System Help You Avoid Glucose Highs And Lows?

Time In Target

This feature gives you a quick insight on how often your glucose levels are within the Target Glucose Range. The green ‘In Target’ bar in the middle tells you what percentage of time your sensor readings were within your target range for that time period. How much time you spent Above or Below your target range is shown by the orange and red bars. The higher the In Target number, the better!

Average Glucose Report

This report shows the average glucose levels for each 6-hour period of the day. If the bars are green – this means that your Average Glucose was within your Target Glucose Range. An orange bar shows that your Average Glucose has been above or below your target range. Average Glucose is a quick and easy way to see if one six-hour period of the day is particularly challenging for your glucose management.

Many things can affect your glucose levels, such as diet, exercise or medication. If your scan reads within your target zone, then you know you are doing great.

      Alcohol

      Exercise

      Fasting

      Overcorrecting insulin

      Menstruation

 IDENTIFYING HYPOS

Low glucose can be caused by a range of things, the usual suspects include exercise, fasting and over-correcting with insulin.

It is important to be aware of any warning signals your body may use to alert you of low blood glucose such as sweating, a pounding heart, shaking or feeling flushed and what corrective actions you can take.

TAKE AIM AT LOW GLUCOSE EVENTS

The ‘Low Glucose Events’ report from the FreeStyle Libre Reader is a brilliant way to see if any particular part of your day is contributing to hypos – it puts you in the know so you can make changes to potentially reduce hypos. The FreeStyle Libre system records a Low Glucose Event whenever your glucose has fallen below 70 mg/dL for more than 15 minutes and shows the 6-hour period of the day that this is happening.
